She is the daughter of a cosmetic saleswoman mother Virginia Gaston and a pharmaceutical company employee father Fred Wright. She has a brother Richard Wright. Wright studied at La Jolla High School and then she joined Taft High School in California.

Robin gained fame for Kelly Capwell’s role in the television series Santa Barbara from 1984 to 1988, for which nominated for Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series. She made her debut in her acting career with Barbara Anderson’s role in the television series The Yellow Rose in 1983, and she played Lori Stanton’s role in her first movie Hollywood Vice Squad in 1986. Wright portrayed Buttercup’s role in the film The Princess Bride in 1987, and she appeared as Jenny Curran in the film Forrest Gump in 1994. She also starred as Claire Underwood in the television series House of Cards from 2013 to 2018.
