She studied at The Buckley School, Sherman Oaks, California, and then she attended Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in Manhattan. Dern dated actor Treat Williams from 1984 to 1985. She has been in a relationship with actor Kyle Maclachlan from 1985 to 1989. She also dated actor Jeff Goldblum from 1995 to 1997 and then Billy Bob Thornton from 1997 to 2000. Later, she started a relationship with musician Ben Harper in 2000 and the couple got married on 23 December 2005. They have a son Ellery Harper and a daughter Jaya Harper. The couple divorced in 2013.
Laura began her acting career with Amy’s role in the television series Insight in 1980, and she played Sharon Anne’s role in her debut film White Lightning in 1993. She gained fame for her Diana Adams’s role in the film Mask in 1985, and she is also known for Dr. Ellie Sattler’s role in the films Jurassic Park (1993) and Jurassic Park III (2001). Dern portrayed Connie Wyatt’s role in the movie Smooth Talk in 1985, and she starred as Sandy Williams in the film Blue Velvet in 1986. She appeared as Lula Fortune in the film Wild at Heart in 1990, and she played Amy Jellicoe’s role in the television series Enlightened from 2011 to 2013.
