Julie Anne Smith is an American actress and author, known professionally as Julianne Moore. She was born in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, United States on December 3, 1960. Her mother is Anne Love Smith, a psychologist, and a social worker, and her father is Peter Moore Smith, a paratrooper in the US Army during the Vietnam War, afterwards, he got the rank of a colonel and then became a military judge. She has a younger sister Valerie Smith, and younger brother Peter Moore Smith, a novelist. Smith studied at J.E.B. Stuart High School in Falls Church, Virginia, and then she attended Frankfurt American High School, Frankfurt, Germany. She also joined School of the Arts, Boston University.

Moore began dating to actor and stage director John Gould Rubin in 1984 and they got married on May 3, 1986. The couple separated in 1993 and divorced in 1995. Later, she started a relationship with American film director Bart Freundlich in 1996, and they welcomed there first child, son Caleb Freundlich in December 1997.
